“Rape of the Sabine Women” Florence, Italy

Rape_Sabine_WomanRome is definitely more of a city for sculptures and fountains, however this was my favorite sculpture in Florence, Rape of the Sabine Women. It wasn’t uncommon that when you walked past, there were always a handful of people sketching the sculpture. The beauty is at every angle. And with each new angle, a new perspective and a new story can be seen for you to interpret. The title of the sculpture can be deceiving, as the woman depicted is not actually being legitimately being ‘raped’ by the others holding her up. It is merely a metaphor for the agony and struggle she portrays in her facial expressions and body language.
