Restaurant Review: Mojitos at Besito

We were delighted to sit down for a sunny Sunday lunch at Besito Mexican this past weekend. Craving some much needed sunshine, after the rain and clouds during the week, we sought out some good eats served up with some good vibes.

The Chestnut Hill location has a gorgeous and bright patio area, all while feeling intimate and secluded. (We could have sat there all day, relaxing.)
img_6679As avid lovers of food, especially anything even related to Spanish or Hispanic cuisine, we knew before even sitting down for lunch we would adore anything and everything that came out of the kitchen. I mean how can you go wrong with classic beans and rice, all while drinking some killer tequila on a SUNDAY? You can’t.img_6710img_6716To kick it off, I ordered the Besito Patrón Margarita ($11) on the rocks, which mixed together Patron Reposado, Cointreau, pomegranate and tangerine juices, and freshly squeezed lime. Now, I don’t want you to think I am over-exaggerating here, but it was the best margarita I have ever enjoyed. Mostly because I adore the taste of tequila, and hate when it is masked too strongly against other flavors. It was clean, booming with flavor, and simple. So good, in fact, I went for another one during our meal. My dining bestie, Natalie, ordered the Besito Tequila Mojito ($11), another showstopper – since I always make my mojitos with tequila and not rum either.

To satisfy our unconditional love for avocado, we ordered the Tableside Guacamole ($12), because we couldn’t resist freshly made guac and warm homemade tortilla chips to snack on. Packed with ingredients such as garlic, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and other herbs, it was definitely heavily flavored and seasoned, which made it addictingly tasty but also less clean on the palette.
img_6685img_6694The plates kept coming as we tried desperately to pace ourselves to make it to the end of our Mexican marathon. Next up, Panquesito de Jaiba ($15). A crispy jumbo crab cake topped with roasted corn, crème sauce, cilantro, fresh crumbled cheese, and of course more avocado. It was good, but it wasn’t the freshest tasting crab cake…I have a strong hunch it was frozen back in the kitchen. The roasted habanero sauce, however, was delicious and made the dish.img_6730img_6735With my second Besito Margarita in hand, we dived into our main course. With one order of the Carne Asada Tacos ($21), the Enchilada Suizas ($19), Elotes de la Calle ($6), Platanos con Crema ($6), finished with black beans and white rice- you could say it was a feast.img_6747img_6753img_6755

…and we finished the whole meal off with some Flan!

img_6761Everything was delicious, the platanos, street corn, beans, and rice were out of this world. I would have loved however, for the price on the entrees, to be incredibly wowed by unexpected ingredients or unique takes on traditional plates. It was too similar to typical comfort Mexican food, and was disappointed not to discover something entirely new. The quality of ingredients was fantastic, but the plates needed a little more creative pizazz.

Besito’s colorful plates and absolutely delicious cocktails definitely make it a spot to check out. It is on the pricey side for entrees, but if you want a small modest dinner with just drinks, snacks, and apps, it’s perfect. I know I will be back soon sipping on the Besito Marg and scooping up some fresh Guacamole.
